1st Grade
Our first graders spend the year exploring Torah stories, learning Hebrew letters, and celebrating many Jewish holidays. Just like they did in Kindergarten, our First Graders begin each week in the Sanctuary for tefillah (prayer). It’s a fun way for them to meet up with friends, join their teachers, and get to know Jewish songs and prayers in our Sanctuary. Following Tefillah, each week our students rotate between “classes”. Throughout the year, they’ll study Hebrew, explore stories from the Torah in a more in-depth way, learn about Jewish holidays with related art projects, and go to an enrichment which encourages a physical activity in a way that celebrates Jewish and Israeli culture (music, gaga. or Krav Maga, etc).
During this year, students meet with a sofer (Torah scribe) and work with a textile artist, who helps the students to create beautiful Torah themed artwork for each child to take home. The students really love both projects. This year is always a true highlight of Religious School for many students.
Our first Grade families have the opportunity to participate in a family education session and a parent education session taught by a member of our clergy team. Additionally, first grade families will share a shabbat dinner and lead a First Friday Shabbat Service.
